Surprise Mother’s Day Cake

Surprise mum this Mother’s Day with this delicious chocolate cake recipe with lots of love inside.

6-8 (23cm loaf tin)

45-60 minutes



Cake Base

  • 175g Butter, unsalted, soft
  • 175g Raw caster sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 225g Self raising flour
  • 50g Almond meal, toasted
  • 130g Sour cream
  • Little vanilla bean paste
  • Pinch of salt


  • 120g Lindt DESSERT Premium Dark
  • 20g Butter
  • 15g Honey

For the Heart centre

  • Remaining Cake Base Mix

You can make the centre in any shape or simply just marble the batters

    For the Cake Base

    • Combine all the ingredients for the cake base in the bowl of your electric mixer and beat well for 1 minute to mix thoroughly.

    • 600g of the mix and set aside for the chocolate cake. Use the remaining batter to create the Heart centre.

    • The batter into an 18x18cm lined baking tray and bake for 15 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool.

    • A heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out the hearts. Stack the hearts in lots of 4 on a plate and place in the freezer for 30 minutes

    For the Chocolate Cake

    • Place chocolate, milk and cocoa into a saucepan and gently warm until chocolate has just melted.

      Allow to cool slightly and mix into the 600g of cake batter.

    • A small amount of the chocolate batter into the base of a paper-lined loaf tin. Then place the row of chilled hearts in the centre of the tin and top with remaining batter.

    • For 40-45 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool.

    For the Glaze

    • Combine all ingredients and warm until chocolate is just melted.

      Decorate the top of the cake with the glaze.
